Initial situation at the customer's site

Our client, a renowned, leading IT service provider in the automotive sector, has been developing and operating the central web platforms of a world-leading automotive manufacturer for over ten years.

The experts worked in agile teams on the development, operation, and continuous modernization of two central web platforms. These platforms provide numerous internal organizations, international subsidiaries and brands of the manufacturer, as well as financial service providers, with web content, services, and technological components.

Based on this, the respective units can operate and further develop their digital presence and services for customers and potential buyers.

A web platform, based on Adobe Experience Manager (AEM), provides centrally created content for the automotive manufacturer's international websites. This includes, among other things, texts, images, media, and other digital content from the marketing departments.

The platform enables the various brands and country organizations to use content efficiently while meeting requirements for scalability, availability, and consistent quality standards. A separate web platform provides technologies, components, and services for the digital offerings of internal customers. This platform is powered entirely by Amazon Web Services.

Tasks

eAces, as the customer's partner for external IT experts, supported him with experienced DevOps engineers, cloud and software architects.

Digital customer requirements and technological frameworks are constantly changing in the automotive industry. New requirements from marketing, sales, and specialist departments must be integrated into international web offerings in a timely manner. This also increases the demands on the underlying platforms. They must be continuously adapted, expanded, and modernized without compromising the stability and availability of the production systems.

Key challenges include:

  • the reliable provision of business-critical web and cloud services,
  • the implementation of new requirements from numerous specialist areas and state organizations,
  • the automation of infrastructure, development and deployment processes,
  • the combination of software development and classic IT operations,
  • the continuous modernization of the toolchains,
  • Ensuring high test coverage and software quality,
  • as well as the controlled rollout of changes to the production systems.

eAces provides specialized DevOps engineers and architects for both platforms. These experts are fully integrated into the agile teams and assume responsibility throughout the entire platform lifecycle.

The responsibilities included:

  • Conception and further development of the cloud and software architecture,
  • Development and customization of platform components,
  • Building and optimizing AWS-based services,
  • Automating cloud infrastructure with Infrastructure as Code,
  • Development and maintenance of CI/CD pipelines,
  • Creation and further development of GitHub Actions workflows,
  • Migration of existing repositories, workflows, and extensive Groovy scripts to GitHub,
  • Expansion of automated tests,
  • Monitoring, fault analysis and troubleshooting,
  • Support for ongoing platform operations,
  • as well as technical advice for product and project managers.

These roles combine development and operational responsibility. Approximately 30 percent of the work involves traditional operational tasks. This allows the teams to develop new functions while simultaneously ensuring stable, secure, and efficient operations.
